Why do dried plums ‘get you moving’?

A 2018 study explored the effects of dried plum on maintaining a healthy bowel. Several studies have shown that dried plums are significantly superior to psyllium (a fibre that is often taken for constipation) when it comes to providing relief from constipation. Psyllium is high in soluble fibre, not insoluble fibre. Dried plums on the other hand are a rich source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre, as the name suggests, absorbs water and keeps the stool soft. This actually slows digestion, whereas insoluble fibre speeds gut transit time up by adding bulk to the stool.
