Why do dried plums ‘get you moving’?

19 October 2018

A 2018 study explored the effects of dried plum on maintaining a healthy bowel. The consumption significantly increased stool frequency and stool weight with good tolerance levels in terms of GI symptoms and no weight gain. Our Queen Garnet Powder Sachets have been made using freeze-drying to keep the abundance of nutrients and antioxidants intact.

Read about the components of dried plums that keep you regular below:

Fibre

Several studies have shown that dried plums are significantly superior to psyllium (a fibre that is often taken for constipation) when it comes to providing relief from constipation. Psyllium is high in soluble fibre, not insoluble fibre. Dried plums on the other hand are a rich source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre, as the name suggests, absorbs water and keeps the stool soft. This actually slows digestion, whereas insoluble fibre speeds gut transit time up by adding bulk to the stool.

A lot of people take prune juice to relieve constipation, but the juicing process actually removes most of the fibre. Our QG Nectar keeps a lot of this fibre intact which is why it has a thicker consistency – why waste that fibrous goodness? Our QG powder also contains 2.36g of dietary fibre per 10g serve!

Potassium

Did you know that dried plums have even more potassium than bananas? A deficiency in potassium can be a culprit for constipation as food moves more slowly through the digestive tract. Potassium is an important electrolyte that balances water and acid levels, promoting a healthy gut.

Phenolic chlorogenic acids

The natural laxatives that make you go to the bathroom after a cup of coffee. These acids get fermented by the gut microbiota, stimulating the production of helpful short chain fatty acids and leading to an array of health benefits. As a phenol like anthocyanin, chlorogenic acid has both antioxidant and prebiotic activity, promoting the effects of good gut bacteria. It has also been found to prevent metabolic syndrome, effectively reducing body weight, hypertension and reducing the risk of diabetes.

Sorbitol

Sorbitol is a natural sugar that has an osmotic property. That is, it draws water into the colon to soften stools and stimulate bowel movements.

Isatin

Isatin is a natural laxative that gently stimulates bowel movement.
